Who is responsible for unblocking your drains?

Detached houses

Your local water authority are responsible for blockages in the main sewer (red) and householders are responsible for all the drains up to the property boundary (purple).

Semi-detached or terraced houses

If you share a drain with your neighbour, the water authority are responsible for the shared section (red) and homeowners are responsible for their own connecting drains (purple).

Flats or apartments

If you live in a block of flats, the management company or owners are responsible for all drains up to the property boundary (purple) and your local water authority for drains beyond that (red).
